These mysterious people dominated the island until their replacement by the Taino Indians in 800 A.D. It wasn’t until Columbus’ famous 1493 voyage that European contact was made. Flourishing coffee plantations and slaves from Africa contributed to the success of this now Spanish colony. In 1898, Puerto Rico officially joined the United States as a result of the Treaty of Paris, paving the way for a blossoming tourism industry. Old forts, mid-century churches and ancient courtyards still stand as a modern testament to Puerto Rico’s history.
